SURFING
In the Lau Lagoon of North Malaita there are more than a dozen breaks, some of them world class right and left handers. Typical wave size is three to five foot, but can get bigger. Like anywhere, there can be flat days better spent fishing or snorkelling. Depending on tides and breaks, the waves are suited to a range of surfers from beginner to advanced. While there are opportunities for adventurous travellers, you could spend weeks travelling and never even get your boards out of your bag. Therefore, local knowledge is recommended to get to the breaks, arrive on the right tides and swell direction, as well as judge the right places to paddle out, take off, and pull off the waves. You are not going to run into any other surfers. If you have the time and patience, jump on a ship and explore.
